These say\u00a0when children should be kept off school and when they shouldn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"o3y3j\">If you do keep your child at home, it&#8217;s important to phone the school or\u00a0nursery on the first day. Let them know that your child won&#8217;t be in and give them the reason.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"hj0ej\">If your child is well enough to go to school but has an infection that could be passed on, such as a cold sore or head lice, let their teacher know.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h2 data-block-key=\"ypi69\">Other illnesses<\/h2>\n<p data-block-key=\"37csu\">Follow this advice if your child does not have coronavirus symptoms or they had a test and it was negative (they do not have coronavirus).<\/p>\n<h3 data-block-key=\"gizs2\">Coughs and colds<\/h3>\n<p data-block-key=\"jm6wt\">It&#8217;s fine to send your child to school with a minor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/cough\/\">cough<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/common-cold\/\">common cold<\/a>. But if they have a fever, keep them off school until the fever goes.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"ljp46\">Encourage your child to throw away any used tissues and to wash their hands regularly.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h3 data-block-key=\"9yomh\">High temperature<\/h3>\n<p data-block-key=\"kdncp\">If your child has a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/fever-in-children\/\">high temperature<\/a>, keep them off school until it goes away.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h3 data-block-key=\"cc86o\">Chickenpox<\/h3>\n<p data-block-key=\"gg9e5\">If your child has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/chickenpox\/\">chickenpox<\/a>, keep them off school until all the spots have crusted over.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"zsf3y\">This is usually about 5 days after the spots first appeared.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h3 data-block-key=\"njqpo\">Cold sores<\/h3>\n<p data-block-key=\"tdie5\">There&#8217;s no need to keep your child off school if they have a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/cold-sores\/\">cold sore<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"airws\">Encourage them not to touch the blister or kiss anyone while they have the cold sore, or to share things like cups and towels.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h3 data-block-key=\"3aw1f\">Conjunctivitis<\/h3>\n<p data-block-key=\"ykbhk\">You don&#8217;t need to keep your child away from school if they have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/conjunctivitis\/\">conjunctivitis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"wo5ww\">Do get advice from your pharmacist. Encourage your child not to rub their eyes and to wash their hands regularly.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h3 data-block-key=\"xy1gw\">Coronavirus (COVID-19)<\/h3>\n<p data-block-key=\"3mb83\">Your child should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people if they have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/is-my-child-too-ill-for-school\/\">symptoms of COVID-19<\/a>\u00a0and they either:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-block-key=\"akili\">have a high temperature<\/li>\n<li data-block-key=\"9qbl3\">do not feel well enough to go to school or do their normal activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-block-key=\"65b9r\">If they have mild symptoms and they feel well enough, they can still go to school.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h3 data-block-key=\"yf6wp\">Ear infection<\/h3>\n<p data-block-key=\"pzpef\">If your child has an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/ear-infections\/\">ear infection<\/a>\u00a0and a high temperature or severe earache, keep them off school until they&#8217;re feeling better or their high temperature goes away.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h3 data-block-key=\"74c46\">Hand, foot and mouth disease<\/h3>\n<p data-block-key=\"9m8jx\">If your child has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/hand-foot-mouth-disease\/\">hand, foot and mouth disease<\/a>\u00a0but seems well enough to go to school, there&#8217;s no need to keep them off.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"w4gdp\">Encourage your child to throw away any used tissues straight away and to wash their hands regularly.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h3 data-block-key=\"tnh7k\">Head lice and nits<\/h3>\n<p data-block-key=\"9sa7h\">There&#8217;s no need to keep your child off school if they have head lice.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"zk1cy\">You can treat\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/head-lice-and-nits\/\">head lice and nits<\/a>\u00a0without seeing a GP.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h3 data-block-key=\"fsw47\">Impetigo<\/h3>\n<p data-block-key=\"b9o3p\">If your child has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/impetigo\/\">impetigo<\/a>,\u00a0they&#8217;ll need treatment from a GP, often with antibiotics.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"zrvr5\">Keep them off school until all the sores have crusted over and healed, or for 48 hours after they start antibiotic treatment.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"hwfh5\">Encourage your child to wash their hands regularly and not to share things like towels and cups with other children at school.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h3 data-block-key=\"gh346\">Ringworm<\/h3>\n<p data-block-key=\"enqft\">If your child has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/ringworm\/\">ringworm<\/a>, see your pharmacist unless it&#8217;s on their scalp, in which case you should see a GP.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"wcw0p\">It&#8217;s fine for your child to go to school once they have started treatment.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h3 data-block-key=\"av2s6\">Scarlet fever<\/h3>\n<p data-block-key=\"yilgb\">If your child has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/scarlet-fever\/\">scarlet fever<\/a>, they&#8217;ll need treatment with antibiotics from a GP. Otherwise they&#8217;ll be infectious for 2 to 3 weeks.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"ek04s\">Your child can go back to school 24 hours after starting antibiotics.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h3 data-block-key=\"3ni1k\">Slapped cheek syndrome (fifth disease)<\/h3>\n<p data-block-key=\"fu4cv\">You don&#8217;t need to keep your child off school if they have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/slapped-cheek-syndrome\/\">slapped cheek syndrome<\/a>, because once the rash appears, they&#8217;re no longer infectious.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"6wc07\">If you suspect your child has slapped cheek syndrome, take them to see a GP and let their school know if they&#8217;re diagnosed with it.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h3 data-block-key=\"v64tu\">Sore throat<\/h3>\n<p data-block-key=\"p4g43\">You can still send your child to school if they have a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/sore-throat\/\">sore throat<\/a>. But if they also have a high temperature, they should stay at home until it goes away.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"gkfux\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"bwh4z\">A sore throat and a high temperature can be symptoms of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/tonsillitis\/\">tonsillitis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h3 data-block-key=\"p595d\">Threadworms<\/h3>\n<p data-block-key=\"akr2s\">You don&#8217;t need to keep your child off school if they have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/threadworms\/\">threadworms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"496sw\">Speak to\u00a0your pharmacist, who can recommend a treatment.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section>\n<h3 data-block-key=\"huw5f\">Vomiting and diarrhoea<\/h3>\n<p data-block-key=\"e0spd\">Children with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/diarrhoea-and-vomiting\/\">diarrhoea or vomiting<\/a>\u00a0should stay away from school for 2 days after their symptoms have gone.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<div>\n<p class=\"nhsuk-body-s nhsuk-u-margin-top-7 nhsuk-u-secondary-text-color\">Page last reviewed: 1 April 2021<br \/>Next review due: 1 April 2024<\/p>\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is my child too ill for school?
